lo/e বৈতালপচীসী The Bytal I’achecsee is a Collection of Legendary Stories relating to that celebrated character in Hindu Annals Raja Vikramaditya. The work contains no traces of art or genius in its composition ; but on the contrary exhibits those clumsy attempts at the wonderful, sometimes bordering on childishness, which are so general in the Legends of a dark (···· The Original of these tales is to be found in the Kathasaritsagara, an ancient and voluminous Collection of Tales and Legends in Sanskrit verse, by Somadeva Bhatta, under the title of Petalapanchavinsatika. There exists also, under the same title, a Sanskrit prose version. In the reign of Muhammad Shaha, Surat Kabishwar, by order of Raja Jye Singh, translated the work from Sanskrit into JBraj Bhakha. This version was translated, by direction of Dr. Gilchrist, in the time of Marquis Wellesley, into Hindoostance by Muzhar Ali Khan, whose poetical name was Vila, aided by 11allu Lal Nab, the elegant writer of I’remsagar, both Moonshees of the College of l'ort William. This translation, of which the present is a new cdition, Was printed in 1805, having been revised, according to the instructions of Capta in James Mouat, by Tarinee ('haram Mitra, the learned Head Moonshee of the above Institution. A Bengali version of this translation was made, by the Editor of the present edition, in the year 1847, by directions of Major G. T. Marshall, Secretary to the College of Fort William, and was adopted, under the title of IBatalpanchabinshati, as a Text book for the students of that College. A poetical version in Bengali also exists and seems to have been taken from the Original Sanskrit... .
