Mr. Sharfuddin was born on the 10th September, 1856, at Neora in the District of Patna, where a branch of the family had removed having obtained a Jagir in that part of the country from the Moghul lEmperor. He is the youngest of the five children of Syed Farzandl Ali, a well-known pleader in those days practising at Chupra. The eldest son died when Mr. Sharfuddin was on his way back from England after having been called to the Bar. The second, Khan Bahadur Syed Nasiruddin, C.I.E., was a brilliant member of the Provincial Executive Service and for sometime file, with great credit, the post of Junior Secretary to the Board of Revenue, Bengal. Subsequently his services were lent to H. H. the Begum of Bhopal who appointed him first as Judicial Minister, and then as Revenue Minister of her State. He died in the service of the Begum in 1912. The remaining two are daughters, the eldest of whom is married to Nawab Shams-ul-ulema Syed Imdad Imam and their sons, Sir Syed Ali Imam (late Iaw Member of the Imperial Council and a Judgedesignate of the Patna High Court) and Mr. Syed Hassan Iman (late a Judge of the Caleutta ligh Court) are well-known to the Indian public. The youngest daughter is married to Khan Bahadur Syed Zahiruddin, the very popular Vice-Chairman of the Patna District loard.
