The Amrita Bazar Patrika (24th May, 1936) (Written by Mr. Hirendra Nath Datta, M. A. P. R. S., one . . of the foremost scholars and educationists of Bengal) Rai Bahadur Dr. Dinesh Chandra Sen has laid on the Bengaleereading public a heavy debt of gratitude by publishing this mollumental history of Greater Bengal (Brihat Baiga) in two volumes. covering 1400 pages of 8vo size. It traces the history of Bengal from pre-historic times to the battle of Plassey which made the East Indian Company, the master of Bengal with the immediate Sequal of that battle. The book is embellished with .354 illustrations. Among these many are new and original including portraits of Gupta kings, specimens of artistic works prepared by Bengalee women, paintings of Maslı karis and Patuas, reproductions of indigenous art exhibited in mats and muslins, -of various artistic poses of men and women, San kirtan-scenes of the 17th century, carvings on wood and stone portraits of Vaishnava saints from the time of the Chaitanya Deva to comparatively recent times, of the poet Ramprasad Sen and his wife, of Mohonlal and Jaynarayan Ghosal and many other men of historic fame Such as Dipankara, Mahabira. Rupa and Sanatana etc. Most these had to be collected by the author himself at great trouble and expense, and we note with pleasure that the Maharajah of Tiperrah has made substantial contribution to reduce the burden debt which the author had to undergo in this connection. But t is a matter of SOE regret that a substantial part of his unique Oollections should have passed out of Bengal proper to the royal palace of Agartala. 郸
