The ladies had been worshipping Shivu night and day that they might obtain Raja Vikramadityu for their spouse. To bestow the gist required of them would be to destroy their hopes; but though buried in distress they agreed to the wishes of the youth, and knowing that a promise cannot be broken, requested him to repair at night to a certain spot, where they promised to bestow on him the necklace. The king, Vikramadityu, disguised as a maniac, happened to be in the vicinity, and overhearing the conversation, gave intelligence of the transaction to the mother of the young man, who on the approach of night locked him up in the house. In the mean time, the maniac repaired to the appointed place, and concealed himself. At the first hour of the night, the king's daughter came to the spot and called on the youth, when the disguised monarch, responded to her. As soon as the girl had placed the necklace over his neck, he pronounced the words “That which is his due,” in order that she might know whom she had selected for a husband.
