লাগিল, তাহা মেলেরিয়া সংসৃষ্ট জানিয়াও আমি ইংরাজী কবি গ্রের (Gray) রচিত নিম্নলিখিত কয়েক পংক্তি আবৃত্তি করিতে লাগিলাম।
“Ah, happy groves it![১] ah, pleasing shade!
Ah, fields beloved in vain
Where once my careless childhood strayed
A stranger yet to pain!
I feel the gales that from ye blow
A momentary bliss bestow,
As waving fresh their gladsome wing,
My weary soul they seem to soothe
And, redolent of joy and youth,
“To breathe a second Spring.”
নিরর্থক প্রেম করিয়াছি তোরে
হে সুখদা কুঞ্জ? সুখদ প্রান্তর!
যথা যাপিয়াছি প্রমাদী কৈশোর
যখন দুঃখ দুঃখ দিত না মোরে।
বায়ু যে বহিছে স্পর্শিয়া তোমায়
ক্ষণস্থায়ী সুখ দিতেছে আমায়।
