With him the Vedas were revealed Scriptures, and his followers call themselves Brahmajnani Hindus, or Vedantist Hindus (pp 6, 44 & I 18) The basis of their faith was the monotheism free from idolatry which the Upanishads taught. Caste was still observed (intermarriage and not interdining is the crucial test of caste). Thus, the first group of Brahmos merely abjured idol worship and retained other Hindu beliefs and practices almost intact.
