The house at Shelidah was being got ready for me— I was to look after the estates. I could at the same time have a farm of my own and carry on agricultural experiments as I pleased. The prospect could not be better for a young man with plenty of energy. Hardly had I got home than Father took me out on a tour round the estates to make me acquainted with the people and teach me the details of management. It was a novel experience for me to travel with Father— just the two of us— in a house-boat.
