লাগিয়া গেল। ইতিমধ্যে ডারিয়স লােকান্তর গত হন এবং তাঁহার উত্তরাধিকারী জর্কশিস তৎসময়ে যৌবন মত্ততার উৎসাহেতে অত্যন্ত প্রবল এবং তাঁহার মনে এই বােধ হইল যে গ্রীক দেশ জয় করিলে ঐ দেশের পরস্থ যে অসীম অথচ অপরিচিত দেশ থাকিতে পারে তাহা অনায়াসে অধিকার করিতে পারি। তিনি এমত বহু সংখ্যক সৈন্য সংগ্রহ করিলেন যে তাহার পূর্ব্বে এমত শুনা যায় নাই এবং শার্দিস নগরে সৈন্যেরদিগকে সমাগত হইতে আজ্ঞা দিয়া আপনি ঐ যুদ্ধনির্বাহার্থ তথায় গমন করিলেন। কথিত আছে যে গমন সময়ে ঐ সৈন্যের জলপানেতে কএক নদী শুষ্ক হইল। এই মহা লােকারণ্যকে আসিয়াহইতে ইউরোপে উত্তীর্ণ করণার্থ হেলেসপণ্ট মহানার উপর দুই নৌকাময় সাঁকো করিলেন সৈন্য পার হইতে সাত দিবা রাত্রি লাগিল। পরে ইউরােপের মাঠে সৈন্যেরা পঁহুছিলে তাহার সংখ্যা করিয়া দেখা গেল যে বিংশতি
