সমকালে ইনাখস পিলাসগিরদের প্রথমবসতি স্থান আরগস নগর নিরূপণ করেন এই প্রযুক্ত গ্রীকেরদের মধ্যে ঐ আরগস নিবাসিরা আপনারদিগকে সর্ব্বাপেক্ষা অগ্রগণ্য করিয়া মানিত। পরিশেষে হেলেনিয়েরা পিলাসগীরদের উপর আক্রমণ করিয়া তাহারদিগকে দুরীকরণ পূর্ব্বক আপন নাম ঐ তাবদ্দেশে দিলেন।
বোধ হয় যে এই হেলেনীয় জাতি দেশের মধ্যে মূলীভূত হইয়া তদ্দ্বারা চারিশাখা জন্মিল বিশেষতঃ ডোরিক ও ইয়োনিক ও এয়োলিয়ন ও আটিক এবং তদ্দেশে উত্তরকালে রাজব্যবহারের অনেক পরিবর্ত্তন হইলেও ঐ চারি বংশের বিশেষ লক্ষণ সকল বিলুপ্ত হইল না। কিন্তু যে অতিসভ্য আগত ব্যক্তিরদের বিষয়ে এই ক্ষণে আমরা বর্ণনা করি তাহারা ঐ হেলেনীয় বংশের পরাক্রম বিনাশ করে।

north, Hellenes. The first seat of the Pelasgi was fixed at Argos Inachus, about the time of Abraham; hence Agros claimed priority among the Greeks. At length the Hellenes rose upon the Pelasgi, and driving them from their settlements, gave their own name to the whole country.
This Hellenic tribe appears to have taken deep root in the country, and to have branched out into four stems, called, the Doric, the Ionic, the Æolian, and the Attic, which retained their distinctive character through all the subsequent changes of government. The authority of the Hellenes was however gradually extinguished by the more civilized emigrants, of whom we shall shortly speak.
