রূপ পরাভূত করিতে পারিলেন না ফলতঃ রোমানেরা পূর্ব্বাবধি যত দেশ জয় করেন তন্মধ্যে স্পাইনদেশীয়েরা যেমন আপনারদের স্বাধীনতা স্থিতির নিমিত্তে প্রাবল্য রূপে যুদ্ধ করেন তেমন অপর কোন জাতীয়েরা করিলেন না। ঐ দেশীয়েরদের সঙ্গে খীষ্টীয়ান শকের ২০০ বৎসর পূর্ব্বে যুদ্ধ আরম্ভ হইয়া ১৩৩ বৎসরপর্য্যন্ত ব্যাপিয়া থাকে অপর ১৪৬ শালে রোমান সুবাদারের অসহ্য অন্যায়াচরণে লুসিটানিয়া অর্থাৎ পাের্ত্তুগীসেরা একেবারে ক্ষিপ্ত প্রায় হইয়া বিরিয়ার্থসনামক এক জন সিপাহীকে আপনারদের সেনাপতি করিলেন। কথিত ছিল যে তিনি নিষ্কলঙ্ক এবং রোমানেরদের মধ্যে শ্রেষ্ঠ ব্যক্তিতে যে গুণ বর্ত্তে তাহা তাঁহাতেই সম্পূর্ণ বিরাজমান। অদ্ভুত সাহস ও স্থির প্রতিজ্ঞামতে ছয় বৎসর ব্যাপিয়া তিনি যুদ্ধ করিলেন এবং তাঁহার দমনার্থ প্রেরিত রোমান সৈন্যেরদিগকে বারম্বার পরাভূত করিলেন। পরিশেষে রোমান সেনাপতিকে মহাপেঁচে ফেলিয়া সুযােগসময় বুঝিয়া সন্ধির সূচনা
