ভার তাঁহাতেই অর্পিত হইল এবং মিটেলসের তাঁহার হাতে সৈন্য অর্পণ করিতে হইল মারিয়স সৈন্যাধ্যক্ষতা কার্য্যে অত্যন্ত নিপুণ অতএব তিনি যুগর্থাকে যৎপরােনাস্তি ক্লেশ দিলেন কিন্তু তাঁহাকে ধরিতে না পারিয়া তাঁহার শ্বশুর মারিটিনিয়ার রাজা বখস্কে বিশ্বাসঘাতকতাপূর্ব্বক রোমানেরদের হাতে সমপর্ণ করিতে লওয়াইলেন। বখস্ আফ্রিকাদেশস্থ ও রোমানকর্ত্তৃক অসভ্যেরদের মধ্যে গণ্য হইয়াও প্রথমতঃ এমত বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা কার্য্যহইতে পরাঙ্মুখ হইলেন কিন্তু মারিয়সের নায়েব সিল্লা বাক্ কৌশলক্রমে তাঁহার ঐ আপত্তি খণ্ডন করিলেন তাহাতে বখস্ মৈত্রীভাবে যুগর্থাকে এক সমাজে আহ্বান করিয়া রোমানেরদের হাতে তাঁহাকে সমর্পণ করিলেন এতদ্রূপ খ্রীষ্টীয়ান শকের ১০৬ বৎসর পূর্ব্বে যুগর্থার যুদ্ধ সমাপ্ত হয় কিন্তু তাহাতে মারিয়স ও সিল্লার এবং রােমান মাত্রেরই সম্ভ্রমের মহা কলঙ্ক জন্মিল।

C. 106, to the great dishonour both of Marius and Sylla, and of the Roman character.
