Four years after the banishment of Hippias, Clisthenes, to strengthen his interest with the people, remodelled the constitution of Solon, and by giving additional power to the people, opened the way for their final triumph. The opposite faction of nobles called in the Spartans to their aid, who were for a time successful; this led their opponents to implore the help of Persia, but the envoys were treated with oriental hauteur, and retired, burning with revenge. The Spartans made another effort to prop up their party, but failed, and the democracy was established in unlimited energy.
