Woe ভারতবর্ষ । ভারতবর্ষে যেমন মম্বাদিল্প-সংহিত সৰ্ব্বমান্ত, প্রাচীন ইহুদী-জাতির মধ্যে মোজেসূপ্রবর্তিত বিধিবিধান তক্রপ সমাদৃত । খৃষ্ট-জন্মের পূর্ববর্তী ১৪৯১ হইতে ১৪৫০ বর্ষের খৃষ্টীয় ধর্মগ্রন্থে মধ্যে মোজেসের বিদ্যমানতার বিষয় অনেকে সপ্রমাণ করেন । সেই ভারতের বাণিজ্য- মোজেসের সময়ে ভারতবর্ষ হইতে বহু মূল্যবান প্রস্তর-সমূহ ইহুদী*" দিগের দেশে রপ্তানী হইত। উচ্চ-পদস্থ ধৰ্ম্মযাজকগণ সেই সকল মূল্যবান প্রস্তর গলদেশে ধারণ করিতেন । * বাইবেলের অন্তর্গত জেনিসিস গ্রন্থাংশে উল্লেখ আছে,—‘একদল বণিক মিশরে বাণিজ্য করিতে গিয়াছিলেন ; তাহাদের সঙ্গে ভারত-জাত সুগন্ধ বৃক্ষ-ত্বক, মসলা ও রজন প্রভূতি পণ্য-দ্রব্য ছিল। জিলেণ্ড হইতে র্তাহারা উষ্ট্রপৃষ্ঠে ঐ সকল দ্রব্য মিশরে লইয়া যান।’ f ভারতের পণ্য-দ্রব্য প্রাচীন সভ্য জনপদসমূহে কিরূপভাবে সংবাহিত হইত, বাইবেলের অন্যান্য অংশেও তাহার প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায় । ইজরাইলের রাজা সলোমন এবং টায়ারের রাজা হীরাম সমসাময়িক বলিয়া পরিচিত। ১০১৫ পূৰ্ব্ব-খৃষ্টাব্দে সলোমনের এবং ১০ • • পূর্ব-খৃষ্টাব্দে হীরামের বিদ্যমানত প্রতিপন্ন হয়। র্তাহীদের রাজধানীতে ভারতবর্ষ হইতে গজদন্ত, চন্দন-কাষ্ঠ, বানর, ময়ূর, স্বর্ণ, রৌপ্য, বহুমূল্য প্রস্তর প্রভৃতি বিক্রয়ার্থ প্রেরিত হইত। কিছুদিন পূর্বে নীলকরগণ এবং অধুনা চাকরগণ যেমন ভারতবর্ষে আসিয়া নীলের ও চায়ের চাষআবাদ করিয়া লাভবান হন, জেনিসিস গ্রন্থের বর্ণনায় আভাস পাই,—মিডিয়া-নাইট বংশের বণিকগণ এবং গোষ্ঠীপতি জেকবের বংশধরগণ ভারতবর্ষে আসিয়া দাক্ষিণাত্যপ্রদেশে নানারূপ মসলার চাষ-আবাদ করিয়া লাভবান হইয়াছিলেন । ৫ টায়ারের রাজা হীরাম এবং ইজরাইলের রাজা সলোমন বাণিজ্য-ব্যপদেশে যাহাদিগকে এ দেশে প্রেরণ করিয়াছিলেন, ক্রমশঃ তাহারাই চাষ-আবাদ আরম্ভ করিয়া বসিয়াছিল। এদেশ “Even in the Mosaic period (1491-1450 B.C.) precious stones which were to a great extent a speciality of India and the neighbouring countries appear to have been wellknown and were already highly valued.
