A Calcutta dispatch by United Press International reporter Kenneth Braddick said an estimated 5000 paratroopers were seen boarding about 50 C7 and C119 "Flying Box-car" aircraft at the city's Dum Dum airport for an airborne assault. Military and diplomatic sources said the target for the drop, the First in the present war with Pakistan, was "the outskirts of Dacca." Indian forces had earlier established a bridgehead across the Meghna river 40 miles north-east of Dacca.
