The union at its recent executive board meeting condemned the "brutal slaughter" of thousands of innocent people by the "fascist Yahya regime" and said it was the main cause of the flow of eight million refugees into India, according to a Bangladesh students' union Press release issued here today. The union said: "It has been established that the sanguinary repression of the struggle for democracy, violation of political rights, throwing the country into economic chaos and letting loose the most inhuman and brutal reign of terror left no alternative to the people of East Bengal but to declare independence and start an armed struggle to gain the same". It called upon the students of Bangladesh to join the cadres of the freedom fighters. "This is the only possibility left to you", it added.
