The press has criticized the Indian authorities for their inability to prevent communal riots. The general opinion seems to be that this action had it been taken earlier would have prevented the deterioration of the situation. 7. The reported refusal of China to recognize Kashmir as part of India was welcomed as giving fresh importance to this unsolved problem. To the Indian press this has come as a great shock.
