PREFACE.
Encouraged by the favourable reception which the last edition of Sykes's English and Bengali Dictionary revised by me has met with from the public, I undertook the revision of this work. I have used my best endeavours to make it useful. I had occasion largely to alter and modify the meanings as well as to add many new and useful words. This has increased the bulk of the book by nearly one hundred pages. In carrying on the work of revision, I have availed myself of the following books, viz.:–
