On counting the prisoners, it was found that the Roman captives in the hands of the Carthaginians were two hundred and sorty in ex cess. Fabius informed the JRomam Senate of thic particulars of the contpact, and the excess of the prisoners, but they refused to ratify the contract or to send the money. Fabius received the rebuke with calmness, but judged in his own mind that though it might be just to leave amen in captivity who had behaved with such pusillanimity, yet it would be still more just to sulfil an
