Hakim, the Caliph wishing to enlarge his palace, protsed to purchase from a poor woman, a piece of ground that lay contiguous to it, but as she refused to part with the inheritance of her foresathers, his officers seized the ground for the Caliph's use. The poor woman immediately complained of this outrage to the chief magistrate of the city who foresaw great difficulty in the affair. He therefore took a large empty sack, and mounting his horse, rode to the Caliph and besought permission to fill it with earth from his newly acquired garden. Hakim showed some surprize at the request, but allowed him to fill the sack. When this was completed, he
