[ 66 ) 31. Astonishing tenderness of the female sex. The duke of Bavaria having made war on the Emperor Conrad, the Emperor beseiged him in his castle, and though the duke defendedit to the last extremity, yet he was obliged to capitulate. All those who were in the Castle feared the Emperor's wrath; the wife of the duke, therefore, sent to him to beg that she and the ladies who were with her might be permitted to leave the Castle without any molestation, to proceed to a place of safety and to take whatever they could carry with them. The Emperor fancying that they demanded this favor only to save their gold, silver and jewels, granted his permission. But he was struck with amazement when he perceived the dutchess moving out of the Castle with her husband on her back, andall the ladies, bending beneath the load of their respective lords. The Emperor was touched with the tenderness and courage of the ladies who considered their husbands as their true treasures
