ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র বিদ্যাসাগর وخية সত্যকথনস্তোপকার ষ্টতাস্তু কিং বিস্তরেণেতি। ধৰ্ম্মশাস্বাধ্যায়ি ঐঈশ্বরচন্দ্রশৰ্ম্মণ: ॥” হিন্দুল কমিটির পরীক্ষা সংস্কৃত কলেজে রীতিমত স্মৃতিশাস্ত্র অধ্যয়ন করিয়া ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র হিন্দু-ল কমিটির পরীক্ষা দিবার সঙ্কল্প করেন। সেকালে যাহারা আদালতের জজ-পণ্ডিত নিযুক্ত হইতেন, তাহাদিগকে এই পরীক্ষা পাস করিতে হইত। ১৮৩৯ খ্ৰীষ্টাব্বের ২২এ এপ্রিল তারিখে এই পরীক্ষা হয়। কৃতিত্বের সহিত পরীক্ষায় উত্তীর্ণ হইয়া পরবর্তী মে মাসে ঈশ্বরচন্দ্র যে প্রশংসাপত্র লাভ করেন, নিম্নে তাহা উদ্ধৃত হইল :– HINDOO LAW COMMITTEE FO EXAMINATION. We hereby certify that at an Examination held at the Presidency of Fort William on the 22nd twenty-second April 1839 by the Committee appointed under the provisions of Regulation XI 1826 Istnr Chunder Vidyagagur was found and declared to be qualified by his eminent knowledge of the Hindoo Law to hold the office of Hindoo Law Officer in any of the Established Courts of Judicature, H. T. PRINRET Preklident J. W. J. OUSELY Members of the Committee of Examination. This Certificate has been granted to the said Issur Chunder Widyathgur under the Seal of the Committee this 16th Sixteenth day of May in the yaar 1839 corresponding with the 3rd Third Jolstha 1761 Shukavda, J. C. C. Sutherland Stey, to the Committee, ১৮৩৯ খ্ৰীষ্টাব্দের মে মাসে প্রদত্ত এই প্রশংসাপত্রে ঈশ্বরচন্দ্রের নামের শেষে “বিদ্যাসাগর” উপাধিটি লক্ষণীয়। অনেকে লিথিয়াছেন, ১৮৪১ খ্ৰীষ্টাবেী কলেজে পাঠ সমাপন করিলে সংস্কৃত কলেজের অধ্যাপকবর্গ মিলিত হইয় তাহাকে “বিদ্যাসাগর” উপাধি দিয়াছিলেন। এরূপ উক্তি যে ভিত্তিহীন, তাহা জানা যাইতেছে।
