ఆ গঙ্গাকিশোর ভট্টাচার্ধ্য প্রথম বাংলা সংবাদপত্র প্রসঙ্গে একটি নূতন সংবাদ সম্প্রতি জানা গিয়াছে । ১৮১৯ খ্ৰীষ্টাব্দের জানুয়ারি সংখ্যা ‘এশিয়াটিক জনালে’ (পৃ. ৫৯.) ১৬ মে ১৮১৮ তারিখের ‘ওরিয়েন্টাল স্টার’ পত্রিকা হইতে নিম্নোদ্ধত সংবাদটি মুদ্রিত হইয়াছে – BENG ALEF NEWSPAPER. From the Oriental. Star, May 16.-Amongst the improvements which are taking place in Calcutta, we observe with satisfaction that the publication of a Bengalee newspaper has been commenced. The diffusion of general knowledge and information amongst the nativen must lead to beneficial effects ; and the publication we allude to, under proper regulations, may become of infinite use, by affording the more ready means of communication between the natives and the European residents.--The Asiatic Journal and Monthly Register (London) for January 1819, p. 59. দেখা যাইতেছে, ১৬ মে ১৮১৮ তারিখে ‘ ৪রিয়েণ্টাল স্টার’ কলিকাতায় বাঙালী-প্রবর্তিত একখানা বাংলা সংবাদপত্রের কথা জ্ঞাপন করিতেছেন । এই সংবাদপত্র যে ‘বাঙ্গাল গেজেটি', তাহাতে সন্দেহ নাই ; কারণ, শ্রীরামপুর হইতে ‘সমাচার দর্পণ প্রকাশিত হয় পরবর্তী ২৩এ মে ( শনিবার ) তারিখে ! কিন্তু এই সংবাদটিকে আমি ‘বাঙ্গাল গেজেটি প্রকাশ সম্বন্ধে প্রমাণ বলিয়া মনে করিতে পারিতেছি না। আমার সংশয়ের কারণ বলিতেছি । ১৪ মে ১৮১৮ তারিখের ‘গবর্মেন্ট গেজেটে প্রকাশিত, ১২ই মে তারিখযুক্ত একটি বিজ্ঞাপনে ( ইতিপূৰ্ব্বে উদ্ধৃত ) ‘বাঙ্গাল গেজেটি “offix ***** (“intends to publish") afoul &f=firs ofts এবং ওরিয়েন্টাল স্টারে’র ১৬ই মে তারিখের সংবাদে দেখা যাইতেছে, “The publication of a Bengalee Newspaper has been
