PREFACE BY THE AUTHOR. The study of the Science of Treatment of Female Diseases has, it is true, commenced in Bengal but recently as compared with that in European Countries ; but for want of a proper text-book on the subject in the Vernacular language, it has not as yet made a fair progress. With a view to partly remove this want, I have compiled this book and tried to make it useful both to students and practitioners, and in doing so I have taken as my guide the well-known treatise on Diseases of Women by Dr. Macnaughton-Jones, and with his kind permission largely availed myself of his labours. I have also consulted a large number of other authoritative works on the subject, and brought to bear upon it my own experience gained through a pretty long connection with Brigade Surgeon Lieut. Col. C. H. Joubert, Professor of Midwifery and Diseases of Women in the Calcutta Medical College, in the treatment of patients in the Eden Hospital and also in private practice. I have endeavoured to make the work thoroughly practical and at the same time exhaustive and up to date in every particular. It is quite possible, however, that in my anxiety to be simple and brief I have now and then had to sacrifice grace of style, but such transgressions are not many, and if my readers will kindly draw my attention to slips of this nature, I shall endeavour, in a future edition, to make the
