If the task of writing a good toxt-book is difficult, that of selecting proper text-books is hardly loss so. Those who are entrusted with the duty of selecting text-books have to regard not only the interests of students who are the readers of text-books, but those of the authors as well; and those interests are to some extent conflicting. In the interests of the readers none but the best books ought to be selected. Their interests might therefore be fully sorvool by arring in favour of exclusion so as to reject all bad and indifferent books, and, it may bc, some good books too. But that will (vidently not serve the intorosts of the arthors. To secure the interests of both readers and authors, we must not only rrrl tole from our list of text-books all bad and indifferent books, but must also slettle in it all good books. 2. The difficulty of the task is not a little enhanced by the fact that tho number of text-books submitted for examination annually is by no means inconsiderable. This rapid growth of books, notwithstanding that it throws a heavy burden on those who are entrusted with the duty of oxamining text-books, would certainly have been matter for congratulation if it had tonded really to increase the literature of the country, or had been evidence of real literary activity.
