(SO) EvENTS ()F H 18 LIFE. present at the meeting who the merits of any book which he has written or in which he is interested are considered and decided upon. Perhaps all that could be desired would be attained whon pocenniary interest direct or indirect in a book is expressly made it ground of disqualification for voting upon, or joining in the discussion concerning the merits of a book. 9. It may be said that the same rule ought to be followed whol the morits of any book likely to ('ompete with a book written by a momber of the Committee are considered. I am of opinion that the rule need not be followed in its entirety, but all that is described will be attained if such member though joining in the discussion, only abstains (as in practice he does now) from voting. For though his joining in the discussion may subject the book to more than usually severe oxamination, from the fact of his boing able to find out more readily than others the defects in a book on a subject on which he has himself written one, neither the public nor the author whose book is under consideration can have any just ground of complaint against that. His colleagues will have the benefit of his criticism, but the rival author will bo secure against the effect of a possibly biased adverse vote. G. D. Banerjece. 14th Jonatay 1896. -ze-OsO>O<s-
