() জাতীয় শিক্ষায় স্যার গুরুদাস। রাজপ্রতিনিধিরূপে লর্ড কার্জন ভারতবর্ষে যে সকল কীর্ত্তি ও অপকীর্ত্তি সঞ্চয় করিয়া যান, বোধ হয় বঙ্গভঙ্গ (l'artition of Bengal) তাহাদের মধ্যে প্রধান। ঐ বঙ্গভঙ্গের ফলে এদেশের মধ্যে একটা বিপুল উত্তেজনা ও আন্দোলনের সূত্রপাত श्व! রাজপুরুষদিগের অদুরদর্শিতায় ঐ আন্দোলন রাজনীতির উদ্বেল ক্ষেত্র ছাড়িয়া শিক্ষার অনুদ্বেল ক্ষেত্রে অনধিকার প্রবেশ করে। ইহা হইতেই বঙ্গদেশে জাতীয় শিক্ষার সূচনা। এই জাতীয় শিক্ষাকে উপলক্ষা করিয়া স্যার গুরুদাস বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় মহাশয়ের সহিত আমার ঘনিষ্ট পরিচয়ের সুযোগ ঘটিয়াছিল। এই জীবন স্মৃতিতে এই বিষয়ের কিছু প্রসঙ্গ কৰিব! কিন্তু তৎপূর্বে ভূমিকা স্বরূপ কয়েকটি কথা বলিতে চাই। (1) A very large number of students has apparently determined not to go is for the University examinations this year. Their idea is to sever all connect tion with the Calcutta University and join some educational institution under national control. There is no such institution now and the question of estabfishing one, if we are to provide for these students, and others who are likely to follow their lead, must be at once taken up and finally determined. Most of us were unaware of this intense feeling amongst the student community, and for one had not realised it, nor was inclined to believ in its existence, until last Saturday when l attended a meeting of students at the request of Babu Hirendra Nath Datta M. A., P. R. S., one of our most sedate public men. At that meeting consisting of over five thousand students felt for the first time the urgency of the matter, and heg of you to take note at the fact and decide what we ought to do under the circumstances, I have had the opportunity of ascertaining the views of some eminent friends and at their desire, I have the honour to invite your presence at a small meeting to be held on 16. 1 .. 25.
