TRIBUTES TO HIS MEMORY. 36 কবি-হৃদয় হইতে এই গণতন্ত্র ‘সমাজের কল্পনা আবিভূতি হইয়াছিল এবং এই সমাজ ঘাঁহাকে কেন্দ্র করিয়া গঠিত হইবে বলিয়া বর্ণনা করিয়াছেন, তিনি অনেক বিষয় কবিবরের বিরুদ্ধ মতাবলদী ছিলেন। তথাপিও তিনি মনে করিয়াছিলেন যে এই কৃষতনু, সম্প্রদায়বিশেষান্তভূক্ত ব্রাহ্মণ “আমাদের সমস্ত সমাজের প্রতিমা স্বরূপ হইবেন” এবং তঁাহার সমস্ত বিধি নিষেধ সমাজের যাবতীয় লোক অবনত শিরে মানিয়া চলিবেন॥৮ বাঙ্গাল দেশের মুকুটমণি; বাঙ্গালী সাহিত্যের বিজয় বৈজয়ন্তী বঙ্কিমচন্দ্রও গুরুদাস বাবুর আদর্শের সর্বথা অনুবর্ত্তন করেন নাই। আচারে ও স্বভাবে, উভয়ের মধ্যে অনেক ব্যবধান ছিল। কিন্তু তথাপিও বঙ্কিমচন্দ্রের যে কি অকৃত্রিম শ্রদ্ধা ছিল সার গুরুদাসের প্রতি তাহা তাহার একখানি চিঠি হইতে বুঝিতে পারা যায়। চিঠি2ानि ५aश्ले:- নমস্কার পূর্বক সবিনয় নিবেদন। আপনার যাহা বক্তব্য তাহা কাল বৈকালে মুখে মুখেই বলিতে পারিতেন, তথাপি পত্রখানি যে নিজে হাতে করিয়া আনিয়াছিলেন, ইহা আমার বিশেষ সৌভাগ্য, কারণ মুখের কথা তখনই অন্তহিত হাইতি, কিন্তু পত্রখানি যত্ন করিয়া রাখিলে শত বৎসর থাকিতে পারে। LLLLSS LLLSSSSSSLSSSSSSLLSSSSSSSMSSSSSSS S LLL SSL L SS for one cannot but feel the most respectful admiration for Gooroo Dass Banerjee's adherence to the age old practices which inculcated reverence for our glorious past and forbade rude manipulation of hallowed forms. To me the most hopeful signs of the times are those which unmistakably point to a reconciliation between two opposing forces in our midst, inherited tendencies and acquired characteristics, as Lord Ronaldshay caffs them. Gooroo Dass Banerjee, one of the earliest “Master of Arts“ of the Calcutta University, was one of the first to combine the scientific knowledge of the West with the profound learning and spiritual culture of the East. As such I make my profound obeisance to his sacred memory.
