LIST OF ILLUSTRATIONS.

Krishnaram Basu or his son. The present representative of their family Babu Krishnachandra Basu is 6th in descent from Krishnaram Basu and is about 55 years old now. The paintings are therefore over 150 years old. The picture on plate IX is, however, of a comparatively later date being a hundred years old.

Plates VII, IX, X, XI and XII are reproductions from old paintings in the house of late Babu Satkari Mitra, 32 Maniktala Street, Calcutta. His son Babu Mathuranath Mitra thus writes to me about the pictures:—

"l owe an apology for not being able to write to you about the pictures before. I have only been able to gather a little information about them and these are that the pictures were prepared by my grandfather, late Kunjabihari Mitra. They were painted by one Sasi Kayal who used to live in Chasadhobapara in Simla (Calcutta) and he was a one-eyed man. The pictures are more than 100 years old but they were thoroughly overhauled about 15 years ago. I think this will do for your purpose."

The pictures were prepared long before the birth of Rabu Satkari Mitra, Mathur Babu's father, who died last year at the age of 82.

Plate IV is reproduced from an old painting in the house of Babu Kshetranath Mookerjee of Bagbazar, Calcutta.

The thanks of the author of the present work are due to the Proprietors of these paintings for their kind permission to publish them and for the help they rendered to Messrs. K. V. Seyne & Bros. in taking the photographs. Babu Haranath Basu's kind services should also be thankfully acknowledged in this connection.
