পৃথিবীর সৃষ্ট্যবধি জলপ্লাবনপর্য্যন্ত।
ঈশ্বর প্রথমে স্বর্গ ও পৃথিবীর সৃষ্টি করিলেন এবং পৃথিবীর ধূলিহইতে মনুষ্যকে সৃজন করিয়া তাঁহার আরাধনা করত পারমার্থিক সুখ ভোগক্ষম হন এতদর্থ তিনি তাঁহাকে প্রাণ প্রতিষ্ঠা করিলেন। আদি পুরুষ আদম হইতে আদি স্ত্রী খবাহ্কে ঈশ্বর সৃষ্টি করিলেন। প্রথমতঃ উভয় নিষ্পাপরূপে সুখে কাল যাপন করিলেন পরে আপনারদের স্রষ্টার আজ্ঞোলঙ্ঘন করাতে তাঁহারা ঈশ্বরের কৃপার বহির্ভূত হইয়া আপনারদিগকে ও আপনারদের সন্তানেরদিগকে দুঃখে মগ্ন করিলেন। এতদ্রূপে পৃথিবীর মধ্যে পাপ প্রবেশ করিল এবং নিষ্পাপিত্ব লুপ্ত হইল। মনুষ্য জাতীয়ের এই প্রথমকাল তর্থাৎ নিষ্পাপিত্বকালের কিঞ্চিৎ২ প্রবাদ তাবদ্দেশীয়েরদের মধ্যেই আছে। হিন্দুরদের মধ্যে তাহা সত্যযুগ কহা যায় গ্রীকেরদের মধ্যে তাহা সুবর্ণকাল কহা যাইত।
ধর্ম্মপুস্তকে লেখে যে আপনার পূর্ব্বসুখের স্থান এদেনের বাগানহইতে আদাম ও খবাহ্ দূরীকরণ হইলে তাঁহারদের হস্তের পরিশ্রমে ও ললাটের ঘর্ম্মেরদ্বারা তাঁহারদের জীবনােপায় করণরূপ তাঁহারদের দণ্ড হইল এবং সেই দণ্ডে তাঁহারদের সন্তানেরা অদ্যপর্যন্ত লিপ্ত আছে। আমারদের আদি জনক জননীহইতে কঈন ও হাবেল জন্মেন। কঈন অতিগর্ব্বী ঈশ্বরের প্রতিকূলাচারী হাবেল অতিনম্র ও ঈশ্বরসেবক ছিলেন। তাঁহারা উভয়েই ঈশ্বরের নিকটে বলিদান করিলেন তাহাতে হাবেলের ঐ বলি গ্রাহ্য কঈনের অগ্রাহ্য হইল। পরে কঈন রাগােন্মত্ত হইয়া স্বীয় ভ্রাতাকে বধ করেন এবং এতদ্রূপে মনুষ্য জাতীয়ের আদিমপুরুষের জ্যেষ্ঠের দ্বারা পৃথিবীতে প্রথমতঃ মনুষ্যের রক্তপাতের কলঙ্ক জন্মে। তৎপরে আদম ও খবাহে্র অন্যান্য সন্তান জন্মিল এবং মনুষ্য জাতীয়ের বৃদ্ধি হইতে লাগিল। মনুষ্য জাতীয়ের বৃদ্ধিহওনার্থে পরমায়ুঃ প্রথমতঃ প্রায় সহস্র বৎসরপর্য্যন্ত দীর্ঘ ছিল কিন্তু তৎপশ্চাৎ ক্রমে২ সঙ্কোচ হইয়া বর্ত্তমান কালীন আয়ুঃসীমা অর্থাৎ সত্তর বৎসর পর্য্যন্ত নিরূপিত হয়। মনুষ্য জাতীয়ের যেমন বৃদ্ধি হইতে লাগিল তেমন অধর্ম্ম এবং অন্যায়েরও বৃদ্ধি হইল। অনেক শত২ বৎসরপর্য্যন্ত ঈশ্বর আপনার আজ্ঞানধীন সন্তানেরদের প্রতি সহিষ্ণুতা করিলেন কিন্তু শেষে পাপিষ্ঠ মনুষ্যেরদিগকে পৃথিবীহইতে উচ্ছিন্ন করিতে এবং পৃথিবী পুনর্ব্বার মনুষ্যযুক্তকরণার্থে নোখ ও তাঁহার পরিজনেরদিগকে রক্ষা করিতে স্থির করিলেন। নোখ অতিযাথার্থিক এবং ঈশ্বরের প্রকৃত আরাধক এবং তাঁহার কৃপার চিহ্নস্বরূপ ঈশ্বরকর্ত্তৃক মনোনীত হইয়া এক বৃহৎ জাহাজ প্রস্তুত করিতে আজ্ঞাপ্রাপ্ত হইলেন তাহা প্রস্তুতকরণ একশত বিংশতি বর্ষসাধ্য।
ঐ জাহাজ প্রস্তুত হইলে ঈশ্বর তাঁহাকে ও তাঁহার পরিজন আট ব্যক্তি বিশেষতঃ তিনি ও তাঁহার ভার্য্যা ও তাঁহার তিন পুত্ত্র ও তিন পুত্ত্রবধূকে এবং প্রত্যেক সজীব জন্তুর দম্পতিকে তাহাতে আশ্রয় করিতে আজ্ঞা প্রদান করিলেন। তাঁহারা সকলে জাহাজে আরোহণ করিলে মহাসমুদ্রের উনই ভাঙ্গিল এবং যেপর্য্যন্ত উচ্চতম পর্ব্বত জলমগ্ন হইল ও সজীবমাত্র থাকিল না সেপর্য্যন্ত চল্লিশ দিবারাত্রি স্বর্গহইতে নিরন্তর বৃষ্টি হইল। তদনন্তর ঈশ্বরের অনুগ্রহেতে বৃষ্টি নিবারণ এবং জল শুষ্ক হইল এবং নোখ সপরিবারে স্থলে উত্তীর্ণ হইয়া এই সর্ব্বসাধারণ জীবের মৃত্যুসময়ে আপনারদের রক্ষার নিমিত্ত ঈশ্বরকে স্তুতিপূর্ব্বক বলি প্রদান করিলেন। এই সর্ব্বসাধারণ জলপ্লাবনের প্রমাণ এই২ প্রথম ধর্মপুস্তকের লিপি। দ্বিতীয় তাবদ্দেশীয় লোকেরদের মধ্যে প্রবাদ। তৃতীয় পৃথিবীর প্রত্যেকাংশে তাহার নিঃসন্দিগ্ধ চিহ্ন। পৃথিবীর সৃষ্টির পর১৬৫৬ বৎসরে এই জলপ্লাবন হয়।
BRIEF SURVEY OF HISTORY.
CHAP. I.
FROM THE CREATION TO THE FLOOD.
IN the beginning God created the heaven and the earth; and having formed man out of the dust of the earth, endowed him with a rational soul, that he might be capable of spiritual enjoyment in the service of his Maker. From Adam the first man, God formed Eve the first woman; they lived a life of innocence and happiness until, by violating the commands of their Maker, they forfeited his favour, and involved themselves and their posterity in misery. Thus sin entered into the world, and innocence forsook it. Of the first age of man, the age of purity, all nations have preserved some faint tradition. Among the Hindoos it is designated the Sutyu yooga; among the Greeks it was known as the Golden age.
The Sacred Scriptures inform us that Adam and Eve, being expelled from the garden of Eden, the scene of their primitive enjoyments, were sentenced to sustain life by the labour of their hands, and the sweat of their brow; a doom in which their descendants are involved to this day. From our first parents sprung Cain and Abel; the former a proud rebel against God; the latter a humble worshipper of his Maker. They both offered sacrifices to the Almighty; that of Abel was accepted, that of Cain rejected. Cain, in a moment of frantic rage rose up and slew his brother, and thus was the earth for the first time polluted with human blood, by the first born of the progenitors of mankind. Other children were subsequently born to Adam and Eve, and the race of man began to multiply. To assist the increase of population, human life was lengthened to the verge of a thousand years, although it has since been gradually contracted within its present term, three-score years and ten. With the increase of the human family, impiety and injustice increased also. For many centuries God bore with his rebellious creatures; but at length He determined to destroy the fallen race from off the earth, preserving Noah and his family to re-people it. Noah was a just man, a sincere worshipper of God, and being selected by God as a monument of his goodness, was directed to build an ark, the construction of which occupied him a hundred and twenty years.
When the ark was completed, God commanded him to shelter in it the members of his own family, eight persons, viz. himself, his wife, and his three sons with their wives, together with a pair of every kind of living creatures. When they had all entered the ark, the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and it rained from heaven incessantly for forty days and forty nights, till the highest mountain was covered with water, and the last animate creature had perished. It then pleased God to cause the rain to cease and the waters to subside; and Noah coming abroad on the earth with his family, offered a sacrifice of thanksgiving for their preservation amidst this universal death. To establish the fact of a general deluge we have; first, the text of Holy Scripture; secondly, the tradition of all nations; and thirdly, its indubitable traces still manifest in every quarter of the globe. The date assigned to the Flood is 1656 years after the creation.
