Babu Rabindra Nath Tagore, the premier poet of Bengal writes:
তােমার প্রণীত “মেরী কার্পেণ্টার” গ্রন্থখানি উপহার পাইয়া প্রীত হইলাম। আমার ছেলেদের পড়িবার জন্য ইতিপূর্ব্বে তােমার “শিখের বলিদান” একখানি আনাইয়া-ছিলাম। বইখানি পড়িয়া ছিঁড়িয়া শেষ করিয়া ফেলিতে বিলম্ব হয় নাই। দুঃখের বিষয়, ঘরের ছেলেদের হাতে দিবার মত এমনতর বই আর বাঙ্গলায় নাই। ভারত-বর্ষের ইতিহাস হইতে সকল প্রকার বীরত্বের দৃষ্টান্ত সংগ্রহ করিয়া তােমাকে বই লিখিবার জন্য অনুরােধ করিবার অবসর প্রতীক্ষা করিতেছিলাম, আজ এই সুযােগে তাহা জ্ঞাপন করিলাম।
মেরী কার্পেণ্টার বীরাঙ্গনা। ইহাঁরা কোন বিশেষ দেশের নহেনইহাঁরা বিশ্বের অধিবাসিনী;এই জন্য ইহাঁরা সকল দেশের স্ত্রীলােকেরই পূজনীয়া এবং পুরুষেরও ভক্তির পাত্রী। তথাপি ইহাঁদের কর্ম্মক্ষেত্র অনেকটা পরিমাণে আমাদের অপরিচিত হওয়াতে দেশের সাধারণ রমণী-দের নিকট ইহাঁদের দৃষ্টান্ত হৃদয়ঙ্গম হয় না। শিক্ষিতা যাঁহারা আছেন, তাঁহারা এই গ্রন্থের শিক্ষা যদি যথার্থ হৃদয়ে গ্রহণ করেন, তবে উপকার পাইবেন। ইতি ১১ই আষাঢ়, ১৩১৩।
MARY CARPENTER-By Miss Kumudini Mitra, B. A.-A short well-written biographical sketch of Mary Carpenter, the well-known philanthropist and social reformer of Bristol. Mary Cerpenter's life is full of inspiration for women as much as for men. On the one hand she demonstrated by her example what vast scope of blessed and regenerating helpfulness to their fellowmen were open to women even in the midst of the many social and political limitations of her time. On the other hand she revealed the power of sympathy in reclaiming what were supposed to have been the wastage of human society. India owes a special debt of gratitude to this noble lady, for her unceasing inter-est in all Indian quetsions and particularly the ques-tion of female education and we are glad that an Indian lady has taken the troubles of interpreting the story of Mary Carpenter's life to her sisters, who are not in a position to read in the original. We hope it will be well appreciated.

A., of Calcutta has pre-sented to the reading public of Bengal a short but excellent life of Mary Carpenter, the celebrated phi-lanthropist of Bristol. Miss. Mitra wields, an able pen, her interpretation of the philanthropist's life to her sisters is admirable and in everyway does credit to the author. May our educated sisters of Bengal be inspired, like this rising author, with the high ideals of Mary Carpenter's life!

মেরী কার্পেণ্টার।—শ্রীকুমুদিনী মিত্র বি, এ প্রণীত। মূল্য ৷৹ চারি আনা। এক খানি চিত্র সহিত। প্রাতঃ-স্মরণীয়া মেরী কার্পেণ্টারের এই সুলিখিত জীবন-চরিত খানি পড়িলে বঙ্গনারীগণ বিশেষ উপকৃত হইবেন। আমা-দের দেশের নারীগণের (শিক্ষিত মহিলাগণেরও) কার্য্য-ক্ষেত্র, ইংরাজ মহিলাদের কার্য্যক্ষেত্র হইতে স্বতন্ত্র। কিন্তু মহৎ জীবনের নকল করিয়া ত কেহ বড় হয় না। সেই জীবন হইতে উদ্বুদ্ধ ও অনুপ্রাণিত হইয়াই উন্নত জীবন লাভ করা যায়। অতএব সর্ব্ব দেশের পূতশীলা নারীগণের জীবন-চরিত আমাদের পাঠ্য। এই জন্য এই পুস্তিকা খানি আমাদের বালিকা, যুবতী ও প্রবীণাদের হাতে দিবার বন্দোবস্ত করা উচিত। পুস্তক খানির ছাপা ও কাগজ বেশ সুন্দর।
MARY CARPENTER, BY KUMUDINI MITRA, B. A.- It is a matter of satisfaction that this little book has been written. The life of Mary Carpenter possesse great interest to all lovers of India. She was a devoted friend to the Indian people, and her treatment of Raja Rammohun Roy has placed the Bengalis espe-cially in her debt.Itis gratifying that the first full account of her life, in an oriental language, should be written in Bengali by a Bengali lady.
The book is well-written and well-printed, and I trust will have the large sale it deserves.
I have had great pleasure in reading the life of Mary Carpenter by Miss Kumudini Mitter, B. A.; and would like to thank the authoress for giving me the opportunity of readiug it. This book is one that will help to satisfy a real need among young Bengali girls, – the need of a pure and instructive literature in their own language. The number of really healthy pure Bengali stories is very small and while we are seeking by education to encourage a love of reading, we find it very difficult to find books fit to read.
This life of Mary Carpenter is pure and inspiring, and every girl who reads it should be the better woman for so doing.
I would urge the writer to go on in this work and give us many more such helpful little books.

BhowaniporeFor some time two little books in Bengalee Sikher Balidan and a Life of Miss. Mary Carpenter by Kumari Kumudini Mitra, B. A, have been lying on our table The authoress is the daughter of Babu Krisna Kumar Mitra, the well-known Editor of the Sanjibani news-paper. We have read the books with pleasure and profit. The style is simple and vigorous, and there is a fascinating air of sincerity which has a charm all its own.
Sikher Balidan is a book which ought to be in the hands of every school boy. It is a thrilling record of Sikh martyrdom. It tells us in a few well-written biographical sketches the story of the up-building of the Sikh character which made the Sikhs what they were and what we hope they will yet be. In all great movements boys and young men play a prominent part, the divine message first comes to them; and they are persecuted and they suffer for their faith. Suffer the little children to come unto me, are the words of the divinely-inspired founder of Christianity; and the faith that is inseparable from childhood and youth is the faith which has built up great creeds and has diffused them through the world. Our boys and young men have been persecuted for their Swadeshism; and their sufferings have made Swadeshism strong and vigorous. The blood of the martyrs is the cement of the church; and the sturdy faith of the Sikh, which braved death and disaster with unflinching courage, was reflected in the heroic suffer-ings of its youthful martyrs. Our authoress tells us the story of the martyrdom of Fateh Singh and Jarwar Singh, the youthful sons of Guru Govind. The two boys, confronted with their persecutor, never flinched from the faith of their fathers. They were entreated to save themselves by abjuring their religion. They firmly refused. They rose above all temptation, even the terrors of death. Mark the heroic words of these boy-martyrs “He who has forsaken his God fears death. To the devoted death is real birth, We rejoice in the presence of death. In death shall we find our everlasting joy." Thus exclaimed the sons of Guru Govind, and torture, followed by execution, terminated their young lives. The little book rereals the process of nation-building through the ordeal of of fire and persecution, It should be in hands of everybody who has his eyes open to the significance of the events that are passing around us. * * *
