২১৪ আচার্য্য প্রফুল্লচন্দ্র রায়ের প্রবন্ধ ও বক্তৃতাবলী ছিলেন। প্রায় সত্তর বৎসর পূর্ব্বে বাঙ্গালী যে বাণিজ্য ব্যাপারে শীর্ষস্থান অধিকার করিবে ইহার স্বত্রপাত হইয়াছিল।* কিন্তু দুর্ভাগ্যক্রমে ইহাদের উত্তরাধিকারীগণ প্রভূত সম্পত্তির অধিকারী হইয়াপ্ত ভোগ-বিলাসে রত হইয়া ভবিষ্যতে বাণিজ্যব্যাপারে দাড়াইবার স্থান পাইলেন না। বাণিজ্য ও ব্যবসায় যেন বাঙ্গালীর প্রকৃতিবিরুদ্ধ ব্যাপার হইয়া দাড়াইয়াছে। কিন্তু বাঙ্গালীর অনুপযুক্ততার জন্য বাণিজ্য বসিয়া থাকিবার নয় ; প্রকৃতি চিরদিনই শূন্ততার বিরোধী। (Nature abhors vacuum) বাঙ্গালীর বাণিজ্যে অনভিজ্ঞতা ও বাণিজ্যবিমুখত দেখিয়া মাড়োয়ারী ও উত্তরপশ্চিমাঞ্চলের লোকের বাণিজ্য ক্ষেত্রটা একেবারে দখল করিয়া বসিয়াছে। এই কারণেই ইউরোপীয়গণ, মাড়োয়ারীগণ বাঙ্গালার নগরে নগরে এমন কি গণ্ডগ্রামে পর্য্যন্ত নিজের ব্যবসাক্ষেত্র বিস্তৃত করিয়া ফেলিতেছে । বাণিজ্য দ্বারা কার্য্য-ক্ষেত্র কি প্রকার বিস্তার লাভ করে তাহার একটা মাত্র দৃষ্টান্ত দিতেছি। এই সাড়ে তিন শত কোটী টাকার পণ্য-দ্রব্য বহন করিবার জন্য কতশত
