Eight of them you have not previously seen and the others I have altered. Of course I do not consider it a trouble, but on the contrary a great pleasure to translate your poem; and now that I see I was so much mistaken in not translating the 8' verses referred to above. In the first instance, I am still more anxious to translate all the other verses that up to this I have left untranslated. I see from your notes to my manuscript that in many places I sailed to grasp the real meaning of the original, not to speak of the mistakes on every page made by the copier. But the plant on which the tender flower of poetry blooms requires a lot of nursing particularly where the work to be donc is that of translating another's work, so that I fear if left to myself I shall not succeed in making a presentable translation of the Battle of Plassey. You say I have not dealt fully with Meermadan or Mohanlal's (I forget which for the moment and cannot find your letter) soliloquy ; also that I did not explain fully Mirjaffar's treachery during the battle. Could you not give me a literal translation of the parts alluded to? I desire to have every verse readable, and this I think I can do by re-writing those that are weakly rendered. Above all, I think it necessary to translate every verse in the original. I
