6 NTRODUCTION Kartikeya. It was in all probability composed by the poet with a view to celebrate the birth of Kumaragupta, the son of his patron Chandragupta II. The personal name of Kumaragupta was Chandraprakasha-a fact alluded to in the stanzas “राजापि लेभे सुतमाशु तस्रात् आलोकमकदिव जीवलोक ।” ‘ब्राही मुहर्त किल तस्य देवी कुमारकल सुषुवे कुमारम् ।” ‘रूपं तदोजस्वि तदेव वीर्य तदेव नैसर्गिकसुत्रतत्वम् । न कारणात् खाद् विभिदे कुमारः प्रवर्त्तितो दीप इव प्रदीपात् ॥??* The Raghuvamsham is the last and the greatest of the poet's epics. Its concluding portions are pervaded by a tone of sadness, a fact which would seem to indicate that the last days of the great poet were not happy. The scenes described in the later cantos of this poem are at once characterised by melancholy and pathos. For instance the description of the abandoned city of Ayodhya (), Raghuvamsham, 5-35, 36, 37.
