"What his real expectaton was, I was unable to understand. Either he did not want to give out all his secrets prematurely, or did not have a clear conception of the tactics whereby the hands of the Government could be forced...... My teason told me clearly, again and again, that there was a deplorable lack of clayty in the plan which the Mahatma had formulated, and that he himself did not have a clear idea of the successive stages of the campaign which would bring India to her cheusind goal of frecdom" (P 81-82)
আশ্চর্য্যের বিষয় এই যে, সুভাষচন্দ্র ১৯২১ সালে যাহা মনে করিয়াছিলেন, ১৯৩৪ সালেও তাঁহার সেই ভুল বুঝিতে পারেন নাই। তিনি বুঝিতে পারেন নাই যে, ঐ “cherished goal of freedom”ই যত গােলযােগের মূল; গান্ধীর “real expectation” যাহা, তাহার জন্য নিজের ঐ কর্ম্ম-পদ্ধতি সম্বন্ধে গান্ধীর যেমন “clear conception” ছিল, তেমনই “successive stages of the campaign” সম্বন্ধে একটি সুনির্দিষ্ট কর্ম্ম-পঞ্জিকাও তিনি প্রস্তুত করিয়াছিলেন। আসল কথা ঐ একটি,― “He did not want to give out all his secrets”। হায় সুভাষচন্দ্র! সেই গুপ্তমন্ত্রটি তুমি এতকালেও ধরিতে পার নাই! তখনও তোমার সেই “cherished goal of freedom”-এর জন্য গান্ধীর মুখাপেক্ষা করিতেছিলে! গান্ধীর ‘cherished goal’ যে কি ছিল, তাহা আজ আসিয়া দেখিয়া যাও―তাহাতে গান্ধী যেমন কৃতার্থ হইয়াছিলেন, ভারতবাসীও তেমনই কৃতার্থ হইয়াছে।
গান্ধী তাঁহার সেই অন্তরের কথা আর কাহাকেও বলেন নাই―বলিলে তখন নেতৃত্ব-লাভ দূরে থাক, নিরতিশয় অবজ্ঞাত হইতেন। তিনি যেরূপ হিতসাধনকে ভারতের পরমার্থ বলিয়া স্থির করিয়াছিলেন তাহা সেকালের সেই স্বাধীনতাকামী ‘সন্তানগণ’, বা রাষ্ট্রনীতিজ্ঞ নেতাগণ শুনিতে পাইলে তাঁহার ভবিষ্যৎ মহাত্মা হইবার সম্ভাবনাও অঙ্কুরে
