These elements, however, form compounds characteristic of living substance and for the most part peculiar to it. Protied, which consists of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur, is present in all protoplasm, is the most complex of all organic bodies and, so far, is known only from organic bodies.
