The hill was therefore postponed for a month. In March 1872, it was finally taken into consideration by the Council. The opposition members proposed to change the designation of the bill and make it applicable to “certain "Brahnos but their proposition was rejected and the law was passed by a majority of two. The Adi Bralınıo Somaj has good reasons for congratulation for the passing of the Civil Marriage Bill. Had the law been passed in the name of the Brahnio Somaj, it would have identified the Adi Somaj with a section of the Brahmo community whose course of reformatory action is different from that of its members and would have nullified its endeavors in the cause of reformation for the last forty-two years by interfering with that healthy, national,independent religious and social progress which it has been the constant aim of the Adi Samaj to promote and foster to the best of its power. It has therefore good cause to rejoice that the former bill has not been passed into law. The present law has moreover left it unhampered by any legislative enactment to pursue that course of action which experience has proved to be most conducive to the success of the cause of reformation in the country.
