But it should be remembered that, Ram Mohun was a Hindu–a Brahmin in the proper sense of the term. He devoted his whole life to better the condition of the Hindus, he fought furiously with the British lion both in India and in England for the removal of the disadvantages under which they laboured, and he endeavoured to establish a national religion for them. He placed the real purport of the Hindu religion before the people. He considored image worship neces3ary for those only who could not grasp at the sublime idea of a spiritual Being; but, at the Raine time, he thought it necessary to give them proper instruction so as to lead them to the worship of the great God in spirit and in truth. And this led him to establish the Brahmo Samaj. This, it is gratifying to find, is the view of the Atli Lyahmo Samaj of Calcutta. The secessaion of the Brahmos as a sect from the great body of the Hindus is a matter of great pity. lt strikes at the very root of the Hindu nationality, Let the Brahmos call themselves monotheistic Hindoos, but, let them not throw the Hindoo name into oblivion, and add anothor sect to those already existing, which have shattered the great nation.
