Ahout the commencement of the last year, the deimand for religiotis instruction was found to be extensive amolio; the natives, and utinerous unsuccessful applications were made to the members for religious tracts and books which they had no means to supply. The Vaidanta and almost every other work, which embodied the exposition of the Vaidantic doctrines, or contained the theological controversies inauntained with Ilindoo ldolaters &c. were out of print, and it was with no inconsiderable difficulty that any single copy of these books could be found by the religious enquirer, except as a favour from Rome particular friend. Under the necessity which arose out of this disheartening circumstance, the directors took upon themselves to found a printing Establishment of their own, and with this powerful instrument in their hands, they put their shoulders to the wheel with increased energy, and forthwith commenced the repubfications of such works as were particularly wanted by the public. This paper which embraces the objects of the society, issues monthly from its press, and contains, besides extracts from, and expositions of standard religious works, moral and theological disquisitions which the members choose to contribute. Can it fail to strike an ordinary observer, that the study of religion is, at present, most extensively cultivated, and its truths as carefully scrutinized among the Hindoos. The membels are fully aware of the extent, to which the cause of religion was carried during the tone of the celebrated Rainmohun Roy. The exertions of the Tuttuvoadhinee Society, however, have imparted renewed energies to the cause.
