The greatest indifference was betrayed in matters of primary interest and those who had influence and resources to undertake works of utility, neglected to exert them. But a change is appearing in the spirit of the times, the dawn of a brighter day is evidently at hand. Manuscripts of ancient philosophers which were buried in the cells of envious ascetics, and libraries that were considered fit only for Princes, are 'now within the reach of individuals of moderate fortunes, public opinion is beginning to decide on the merits of those doctrines which priestcraft had hitherto turned and twisted at its pleasure. A freedom. of thought and purity of feeling are already in the ascendant, aided by the example of Christian spirit and refinement. Men are rousing themselves from that inglorious lethargy in which they had so long slumbered, associations are being formed for securing the comforts of the ryot and guarding the rights of the labourer, projects are set on foot for. putting down the odious distinction of caste, the evils of early marriage, polygamy, and other injurious customs; and for bringing about the re-marriage of widows, the edücation of women, and the amelioration of all classes of society.
