manifestin the history of every accomplished na‘tion, and therefore, should the reformers of India follow up their principles, without diffidence, or fear of difficultics, is it presumptuous to believe that the evils which stigmatize their institutions, will be removed, or is it unreasonable to expect that the éondition of the people must assume an entirely different aspect as respects the state of intelléctual and moral culture, from what it wears under present circumstances ! Every effort they make for the diffusion of knowledge and for the extension of the influence of morality and religion, besides the immediate advantages which it is intended and fitted to produce to themselves, brightens the prospect of the country, and will improve the condition of its generations yet unborn. From such efforts the blessing of Providence is never withheld, and should they be generally made and perseveringly continued so as to give a character to the moral aspect of the people, the success of the experiment is as certain and complete as the transitory nature’of human affairs will permit. 23rd April, 1847.
