160 it was necessary for the owners to stand by and see that the burdens were carried safely to their storehouses; for they consisted of very valuable articlersuch as gold and silver, and precious stones, spices and pearls, sweet gums, and fragrant and beautiful woods. The cotton cloths and fine linens from Egypt, were sent to warehouses, where they were embroidered and made up into rich garments. Many of the articles were arranged in various shops for sale, and were bought by the inhabitants to ornament their persons or houses, or as offerings to their idols. The spices and guns were used, probably, in preparing their food, in perfumes, and in medicines for the sick. In one part of the city were the workshops of mechanics. There arose the sound of the axe, the saw, and the hammer; many quck voices were heard, and many busy hands were at work. But those streets where the dwelling houses of the inhabitants were situated, must have been the most delightful. The houses were separated by small distances, and standing in the midst of gardens planted with trees and shrubberies; so that on looking down one
