192 Nebuchadnezzar lived but one year after his recovery. He died in the forty-third or forty-fourth year of his reign. Evil-Merodach was his successor; who, soon aster he was made king, began to show kindness to Jehoiachin, the captive king of Judah, with whom he had probably become ac quainted and held long intercourse in prison. He gave him his liberty, and invited him to eat every da; at his own table; and though there were many captive kings at Babylon, who had been brought thither by Nebuchadnezzar after his conquests, Johdiachin was more noticed and favoured by Evil-Merodach than any of them. It is supposed that Jehoiachin did not live loing after this great improvement in his condition. A. Evil-Merodach was wicked king. He reigned but two years, and was then murdered by Neuiglissar, his sister’s husband, who thereupon ascended the vacant throne.
