Cyrus was now appointed general of the united Median and Persian troops, and spent many years in preparing for the conquest of Babylon. He first marched into the neighbourhood with his army, and by his prudence and address, contrived to draw off many of the allies of the Babylonians to his own party. He next subdued the adjacent country of Armenia, and entering Asia Minor, fought and conquered Croesus, the righ king of Lydia, who was a friend and ally of Belshazzar; and finally he became master of all western Asia, cxcept only the city and country of Babylon. When he had thus subdued all those kingdoms that #. possibly afford any effectual aid to the Babyloniaiis,in resistance to his premeditated attack, he then marched into Chaldea. Large additions had now been made to his army from the soldiers of the
