282 he had also some converse with the angel who controlled the lions; for Daniel had conversed with angels before. God was able to make this gloomy den like the gate of heaven to his servant, and he most probably did. At length the morning dawned. Darius rose from his sleepless bed, and went in haste to the den «filons. He seems to have had some expectation that God would deliver Daniel from their fury, as he had before delivered his three friends from the fiery furnace. He therefore called, in a mournful tone of voice, to Daniel, from the mouth of the den, and said, (vi. 20.) “ O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions 2° Daniel replied, (xxi. 22.) “o king live for ever !
