306 terrible appearance. His countenance grew pale, and he fell prostrate with his face upon the ground. His body was so much weakened, and his so overwhelmed with astonishment and awe, (v. 9.) that he was like a person in a deep sleep ; yet he heard the words of his heavenly visitor, probably in a visionary rather than a real effort of the sense of hearing. Be that as it may, it is stated that while he lay upon the earth, (v. 10.) an angel came and touched him, and raising him upon his knees, and the palms of his hands, said (v. 11.)“ ODaniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright; for unto thee am I now sent.” Daniel then arose, and stood trembling.
