306 terrible appearance. His countenance grew pale, and he fell prostrate with his face upon the ground. His body was so much weakened, and his so overwhelmed with astonishment and awe, (v. 9.) that he was like a person in a deep sleep ; yet he heard the words of his heavenly visitor, probably in a visionary rather than a real effort of the sense of hearing. Be that as it may, it is stated that while he lay upon the earth, (v. 10.) an angel came and touched him, and raising him upon his knees, and the palms of his hands, said (v. 11.)“ ODaniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright; for unto thee am I now sent.” Daniel then arose, and stood trembling. (v. 12.) The angedésired him not to fear,for that from the firstday that he had begun to fast and humble himself before God, and endeavour to understand his will,oேd had heard his prayers. At that time,which was twenty-one dy8 before,God had commanded this angel to comē and infr Daniel of great events that would hap..pen atature times. But he had been employed, during dwaree weeks of Daniel's fast, in attempting to
