34 He showed great firmness in daring to be singular, and in exposing himself to the anger of the king and the ridicule of the courtiers. He showed great com o o mand over his appetite; for it must have required much self-denial for a young man of high rank, who had been brought up in the midst of wealth, to resist such temptations to self-indulgence. Knowing that luxury weakens the mind, and stupifies the sous, he determined to subject the bodily part of his nature to the intellectual and moral part. While many young men around him were living in pleasure, he nobly determined to live to God in his early days; to devote himself to pre paration for usefulness in iworld, and to cultivate his mind as hišily as possible. He found an ample, reward for his self-denial in increasing health of body and strength of mind, and in a capacity to endure hardships and to perform labour. To all this resolution and perseverance, he united great so - modesty and sweetness of temper and manners.
