50 order, he promised them abundant rewards: if they disobeyed it, he threatened immediate death to themselves and disgrace to their families. They replied, that it was im possible for any man to do what he required of them, and that no king had ever asked such a thing before of the wisest magicians and astrologers. “No one,” said they, “can show it before the king, except the gods whose dwelling is not with flesh.” The king, who was accustomed to be gratified in all his wishes, became furiously angry, and commanded Arioch, the captain of his guard, to kill all the wise men of Babylon. Arioch went out to collect them together, that they might be slain; for even those who were not present were included in the sentence of condemnation. As Daniel and his companions were learned men, Arioch sought for them among the rest, and informed Daniel of the king’s orders. When Daniel heard them, he went in himself to the king, and declared that if only a little time were granted hiđì, he would epgage to interpret the dream. Nebuchadnezzar consented.
