$. 60 the kingdom of Jesus Christ, who would appear upon earth during the continuance of the Roman empire, and begin to rule over men, not externally, or in any visible mánner like sovereigns of the earth, but by bringing their hearts into love and obedience to himself. Again, as the stone increased in size till it became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth, so this kingdom would gradually extend, till all men, everywhere, should be brought to love and trust in Christ. We, according to our modes of thinking and acting, should not perhaps have expected that God would reveal his will to so haughty and tyrannical a heathen prince as Nebuchadnezzar. But He does as he pleases in heaven and on carth. He gave to wicked Balaam the power of ‘foreseeing what was to come many ages after his own time. He knows what is fit and proper better than we do. He knows by whom it is proper to reveal his will to men, when it is proper to reveal it, and how far it is proper to reveal it. Of all this we, however, are quite o incompetent to judge.
