* * 66 be offered unto him. Daniel undoubtedly refused to accept this homage, and explained to Nebuchadmezzar something of the character and will of the one true God whom the Hebrews worshipped. For the king answered, “Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets.” f But though Nebuchadnezzar gave this honor to God, he does not seem to have abandoned his idols, or to have altered his conduct. However, the king rewarded Daniel with many and great gifts, and made him governor over all the wise 'men'of Babylon, chief ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and one of the lords of the council. All these honors were bestowed upon him at the early age of twenty-two. In his prosperity he did not forget his three friends, but spoke in their behalf to the king, who advanced them also to important stations in the government.
