Nobkissen & several other principal Calcutta Merchants offering themselves to become farmers on terms which appen red advantageous to the company, just to the Rajah and equitable to the ryots-their terms were accepted and they sent people to begin the collections buat it was soon found that the farmers required being invested with powers that would deprive the Rajah of his just right and that they acted oppressively in the distress and did not pay the revenues according to their agreement. The Rajah at the same time jealous of their authority and earnest to be again reinstated offered to comply with the terms agreed on by the farmers to pay his former balance and to give security for the due completion of his agreement. The ministers were very urgent for closeling with the Rajah's people and I was induced to acquiesce in the measure from the following consideration. The farmers absolutely demanded to be invested with the Rajah's rights of Zamindary which could not be granted without deposing the oldest Zemindar in the country of his hereditary right in which neither equity nor our Honble Master's orders would have justified us. The farmers have behaved ill and seemed either aiming at getting power and wealth than benefiting and improving the country committed to their charge. An English gentleman being appointed to supervise the Nuddea. Province and superintend the collections. I thought he would be such a check on the Rajah as to prevent his being able to demand the Sircars of its just reveunes or to distress his own Ryots. The security offered by the Rajah being indubitable was another motive with me for assisting to the measure which I still hope will prove to have been rightly judged the only difficulty which seems to present itself is as to the sum of Rs 225ooo said by the Rajah to have been received by the farmers does not prove this sum against the farmers he and his securities are to make it good if he does I hope there will be no difficulty in obtaining payment of Nob kisen and the other farmers.
